Clorox Ad? Keeping it Squeaky Clean?

Was anyone else baffled by this Clorox ad that appeared last night during Mad Men?  I realize that I am about to complain about a company marketing itself based on the pitiful behavior of some business men while watching a show that glorifies it.

If you can't access the video above, a synopsis of the commercial is as follows:  a simple and easily identifiable white oxford button down tainted with the image of red lipstick on it's collar sits in a perfectly situated pile.  After fully scanning the image, the quote "Getting ad guys out of hot water for generations" appears on the screen.

Imagine my surprise!  I suppose that Clorox feels that if we watch this show we have succumbed to the notion that a little mischief is charming, much like Don Draper.  Well, Clorox, there are still some people in this world who don't find much humor in infidelity.  I am one of them.

Perhaps I am making a mountain out of a holemill  molehill, but where does it end?  Maybe next week, we can advertise for aspirin by showing an ad man popping his secratary on the bottom and say "taking the pain out of the a$$ for generations..."

What do you think?  Do you find it funny, or in poor taste?

  2. Yes. I was horrified! I actually had to read the tag like a couple of time to make sure I was reading it correctly.

Not the smartest thing to glorify.

By the way, I watch the show with my mister. Nice.

  3. I agree! I guess it fits into the "time period" commercials they were showing (history of Suave being another) but still ... awkward and unnecessary, I think.

  4. I agree with you completely. Not really something that should be joked about.

  5. Poor taste indeed. I'm with you on the infidelity. Don't get me started on porn..umm..people might think it's okay but it only leads to addiction and who knows what else.
(sorry..had to throw that in there)

  6. Not a fan. I understand why they thought it might go along with the theme of the show, but no thanks. I think they are going to have a lot of women NOT buying Clorox out of disgust for the company

  7. I think it's distasteful. I get that they are sort of playing off the situations in the show, but I think they went over board on this. Infidelity is not 'cute', 'funny', or 'marketable'.

  8. I completely agree with you - it's one thing to watch fictional characters being adultrous and quite another to market a product toward men doing the same thing IN REAL LIFE.

I also second Miss Chelsea's thought that Clorox is going to have to deal with some backlash from women disgusted with this campaign.

  9. Agreed! Watching Don Draper on a fictional show for the drama is one thing... accepting this behavior in real life is quite another!

  10. Yes! I was offended by it and posted that on Facebook asking for feedback from other fans of Mad Men. As of yet, I have heard no feedback from any of my FB friends. I did a search online to see what was being said about it and to my dismay found that this was not the first time this ad was run! I found an article about it posted by brandchannel.com in September 2009! I never saw this ad before last night. Here is the article agreeing with our reaction. http://www.brandchannel.com/home/post/2009/09/28/Clorox-Mad-Men-Ads-Miss-The-Target.aspx

  13. I am so glad you mentioned this! It was one of those things that raised my eyebrow, but not in a provocative way. Tacky, tacky, tacky!!

  14. Oh, my my. Look at that. Well, I didn't see this last night, but I agree with you, Jen. Distasteful. Not charming. Clorox definitely achieved their objective though cause we're talking about it, lol. Not in good taste, though. I'm with Kristin, infidelity is NOT charming!

  15. That is definitely an odd commercial. I love 'Mad Men' but I don't exactly 'approve' of the cheating.

  17. I saw it, and I thought it was in VERY poor taste.

What Clorox doesn't seem to get, is that even in our MODERN generation, women do the laundry 99% of the time. So... is the WIFE getting the lipstick stain out??? Or we to believe his mistress is slaving away cleaning his shirts? I wonder....

  18. Here is a link to send a comment. Told them I wouldn't be buying their product again, ever. Said men don't do laundry and when they do they don't use bleach, and that they were idiots for broadcasting an ad that is offensive to the people who DO buy their product.
