HELP: We've got a skeeter situation

When I'm rocking Jane to sleep at night, I like to tell her little things about how much I love her.  Like, "Jane, I would love you even if you wore socks on your ears and earmuffs on your toes to keep warm."  Or, "Jane, I would love you even if you decided you hated Mardi Gras and loved the Atlanta Falcons."  Or, "Jane, I would love you even if you were green and were covered in polka dots."

Well, my silly little banter backfired, because as of yesterday, Jane was indeed covered in dots.  The dots I speak of are care of the terrible, awful skeeter situation we have here in New Orleans.  With no winter freeze, they are worse than ever!  The second we step outside, they swarm around Jane.  I counted ten bites including one on the bottom of her foot and one on her ear...

We've got this bug repellant sunscreen from Whole Foods, but it turns her into a citronella candle and doesn't seem to do anything.

Readers. I NEED YOUR HELP!!!

What do you use to keep these icky pests away?  What do you use to help your little one once they've been attacked?

  1. Have you tried Avon Skin So Soft? Supposedly it works pretty well, and should be baby safe.

  2. We have been lucky and avoided the worst of the mosquitoes which is a miracle considering I'm surrounded by the labranche wetlands!

But a friend of mine told me to spray listerine around the perimeter of your porch, patio, etc and supposedly it keeps them away. We use the off for kids (it's a purple lotion) and it's a very low deet percentage and the ped. said it was ok to use.

    GOod luck!

  5. I have used skin so soft and it worked really well. I've also heard if you put a dryer sheet in your pocket that keeps the mosquitos away, but I haven't tried that. I guess it wouldn't hurt to throw one in the stroller, too!

  6. We talked about spraying our yard...but haven't done it yet. I use California Baby Bug Repellent Spray (got it from Target). It's all natural and seems to work well. I spray my girls before going out and keep it with me while we're out. Respray as needed and around us! Good luck!

  7. We have the same problem! Poor Addie's foot had so many bites on it one day & it became swollen. :( I've tried the California Baby bug repellent but it does have a somewhat strong scent (or I have a sensitive nose). Lots of people rave about Avon Skin So Soft so maybe we'll try that next.

  8. I was in Mandeville but now in Gonzales and have the same issue. I use Off Dry Spray. It does have an odor, but works. Or Off family (I think that's what it is called). It's in a pump. If a mosquito makes it way into the house, you know the one in the bedroom that you can hear but can't see. I tuck some dryer sheets around my kids pillows and they survive the night without getting eatin alive. Good luck and let us know what you come up with. I too have heard about the listerine, but haven't tried it. Avon skin so soft use to work when I was little, bu doesn't seem to be as effective as it once was.

  9. Poor thing. We don't have this issue in AZ but last year when we went back to MN I used the Ca baby stuff. It seemed to work well. I also, have heard good things about the AVON stuff but I haven't used it since I don't know anyone selling avon. Hope Jane isn't too uncomfortable.

  10. Like your friend mentioned I heard that the listerine works great. I also have a friend that recommended Suave Lavender Vanilla scent body lotion and they said it works better then Skin So Soft. I also read this: http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/2012/07/20/homemade-natural-insect-repellent-options/ I hope you find something that works soon!!!

  11. skin so soft is what we use - understand it is not any toxins in it but that it makes it too slippery for them to grab hold.
