A Funny Story and an Even Funnier Photo

So two of Mark's brothers and their wives as well as my roommate from college and her hubby joined us here in Beaufort for the Fourth of July weekend.  Whenever the Allen brothers get together, you can guarantee two things: there will be hours of hysterical stories being told (and retold), and there will inevitably be the occurrence of a sporting event.  This weekend was, of course, no exception.

Mark determined that the most fitting event for the weekend would be a winner takes all Wimbledon tennis tournament.  He, being the oldest brother, declared himself the one seed.  After much pomp and circumstance, the four gentleman clad in whatever white apparel they could muster began to compete for the ultimate prize - a Hilton Head Tennis t-shirt acquired earlier that day at the Salty Dog Cafe.

There on the clay courts of Habersham just as the sun was setting on Beaufort, and with their families looking on with pride, one of these men would rise to his rightful place among the Allens.  After a battle with the four seed Stephen, Mark appeared tired but ready to face his mighty opponent, Gabe who had earlier taken down a fierce competitor, Barn.

The championship was  a match that will go on as one of the greatest ever played in Beaufort.  While his effort was extraordinary, Gabe could not overcome the incredible play of his big brother.  As Mark scored the championship point, he dropped to his knees (Rafe style) and the crowd cheered!

After an amazing celebration of joy and excitement, Mark was photographed with his family.  There is one picture from that night which truly represented the kind of man the newly crowned champion is.  In the midst of all of the excitement, Mark knew there was only one person (do dogs count as people?!?!) he most wanted to share this moment with - his daughter Beignet.

PS- the inspiration for this championship photo came from the greatest champion of all time, Drew Brees!

Thanks Drew for giving Mark the inspiration he needed when the going got tough in that last set.  You really are a hero!

  1. Too funny! I love that Beignet had head phones on her ears! (and of course, I love that his inspiration was Brees and his son!)
