If I Was Building My Dream House...

One of the couples who stayed with us over the Fourth of July is currently finalizing their plans for the house they're building in the neighborhood I grew up in.  It was so exciting to hear them discuss their plans!  It got me to thinking, if I were to start building the house of my dreams, what would it look like?

That's a tough question, when you think about it.  It really requires you to consider the question "what is my design aesthetic?"  Pondering mine, I spent the weekend on design websites like Elle Decor and Architectural Digest .  There are so many choices to consider!!!  No matter how beautiful the more traditional homes were, I continued to be drawn to the contemporary ones.

And then, we went to see New Moon (it was the best movies of the series!!!).  And I affirmed my love for contemporary design by drooling over the Cullen's house for two hours.  I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but the natural elements, clean lines, open floor plan, and large windows are right up my alley.

I really enjoyed this Architectural Digest article: Simply Sustainable about a 45th floor Manhattan apartment that has gone green!  The design of it's interior is exactly what I would want for my dream home!

I love that the living and dining spaces are joined.  I think it makes for such a nice flow for entertaining!

The light fixture above the table is spectacular...

I am a fan of the very simple and sleek design of the cabinetry, and the pop of color in the bar stools adds a little fun to the space.

If this was my bathroom, I may never leave it!

For a contemporary space, this bedroom still feels warm and cozy.

I'm not sure I could get any work done with a view like that, but I think this office space is beautiful!

Now that you've seen the inside of my dream home, I love to hear about yours!

  1. Spectacular! I would love to build a huge plantation home- with balconies everywhere! Beautiful hard wood floors, giant stair case, arched hallway entries, and a large foyer to hang family portraits! Ahhh... maybe one day! ;)

  3. I would love to own a house in the Lake Harriet area of Minneapolis. I would want a Craftsman Style house with original wood floors, crown molding, and lots of built in bookshelves. I want a formal dining room with a built in buffet. I want a open kitchen with stainless steel applicances. I want an open living room that would have room for a baby grand piano.

Aside from that, I don't know what else I woudl throw on the list. Granted this dream house is somewhat an achievable dream house. If the sky was the limit, I'd have way more requirements. :)

  6. You should look up Alexis Stewart's NYC apartment. It's very contempory. You might love it. She documented the whole remodel oh her blog on her Satelite radio show blog. It's pretty cool I must say.

  10. Those are some fabulous pictures...the bathroom does look amazing! I can't wait to pick out my dream home someday, but my design aesthetic has always been pretty much the same...I love big old Southern homes, especially the old French Louisiana style, with wrought iron on the balconies. Even better if it's haunted =)

  14. I also love the simple, sleek look! But I would have to have a huge, comfy bed that I could spend hours in if I wanted. Another must would have to be a balcony with a fantastic view. Thanks for sharing the photos - they were great!

  15. I love the house you have on here. But I think I lean to craftsman or a plantation house with porches all around both stories.
The one thing I dream of these days is a bigger kitchen

  16. You've just reminded me that I hate that I let my subscription to Architectural Digest run out!

My Prince & I have been doing a lot of "dream house" discussions lately - I'm not sure why! We just bought this house (our first) last year, so no dream homes in our foreseeable future.

But it's funny...he goes on&on about things like landscaping & outdoor fireplaces & rock exteriors. I envision columns, floor-to-ceiling windows, wrought iron staircase railings, etc...I am sure we could make it work! LOL

    Have a great week!

  17. This is really interesting take on the concept. I never thought of it that way. I came across this site recently which I think it will be a great use of new ideas and informations about Modular housing building. I love the house you have on here.

  18. Oooohhhh isn't it fun to dream? My dream home would be a classic Cape Cod style home with traditional charm. Lots of old details, lots of fireplaces, and lots of chandeliers... le sigh.
