Tag, You're It

Yesterday, Julie from Brown Eyed Belle tagged me in a fun little game.  She asked that I go to my picture file and click on the 10th picture and post a description of the photo!  Fun, fun!!

My 10th Picture

I LOVE this picture!  This is a photo of Mark and me (I had just gotten the Katie Holmes bob) at my birthday brunch at Commander's Palace two years ago.  As you can tell from this earlier post, that is a favorite birthday activity of mine.  It is truly the most celebratory place I know.  At the jazz brunch, there are always balloons at each table and music in the air.  And on your birthday, they bring out a chef's hat for the birthday girl to wear, and you better believe I wear mine!

I have been pondering how to spend my 30th birthday, which isn't until November, but a girls gotta plan ahead for such a monumental bday.  We'll be living in New Orleans by that time, so I wanted to do something you could only do there.  For years, I have been reading about how amazing it is to dine at The Chef's Table at Commanders Palace.  This experience includes dinner at a table for four people (no more, no less) in the kitchen at Commanders.  While bright and somewhat loud, your table is in the middle of all of the action.  The meal consists of between 8-10 courses with an option for a wine pairing for each course (gotta get in on that action).  There is no menu; each chef prepares a course based on the best and freshest ingredients they have available that day.  As they present each course to you, they give a description of how it was prepared and where the ingredients came from.  It is like real life Top Chef.  It is one of those culinary experiences you only dream of, and what better a reason to make dreams come true than a girl's 30th bday!  Mark called recently, and as we imagined, he was told weekends book more than a year in advance.  However, they were able to get a table for us for the night following my birthday!  YAY!!!!  I have been dreading my 30th bday since I turned 29, but now I cannot wait.  What an amazing way to celebrate our return to New Orleans and my 30th.

If you'd like to play along and post your 10th photo with a little description of why you love it, let me know!!  I'd love to check it out!

Oh What a Beautiful Morning

It is truly the most beautiful day in Beaufort today.  It is chilly, but the sun is shining so brightly.  My trainer has been trying to get me to do cardio in the mornings because it is so good for your metabolism, but I've been having a really hard time getting to sleep which has made getting up in enough time to exercise impossible.  This morning, however, I felt motivated, so I got up and jogged over to the gym.  I am so glad I did.  Not only did the exercise help wake me up, but I got to see our neighborhood in all it's glory.  The sun was shining through the trees so beautifully I had a hard time making myself go back inside to get ready for work.

When I was exercising, I was listening to Better Than Ezra on my phone.  They are far and away my favorite band in the world.  I can, and do, listen to their greatest hits album on repeat for hours at a time.  In high school they were so popular that every girl I knew wanted to marry lead-singer and guitarist Kevin.  My friend Corrie and I would drive to the Fly (a beautiful park on the Mississippi River in NOLA) in her dad's Miata with the top down and BTE blaring.  We thought we were so cool!  We'd get there and meet up with all of our friends and spend hours on a Saturday hanging out on the River.  Those were the days.  Maybe that's why I love this band so much.  I hear there music and I feel young and carefree.  I can here one verse of one song and immediately transport back to the Fly.  Or I can go travel in my head back to one of their concerts at Jazzfest or at House of Blues on the Saturday of Mardi Gras.  (PS - at this year's concert they opened their show with Mickey Loomis - the Saints' GM presenting the Lombardi Trophy to the crowd - AWESOME!).

What a great start to the day!  I hope yours started off just as good!

PS - Is there a song that takes you back to the good ole days the minute you hear it?

A Thought for Thursday - It's the Little Things

It's funny, I have a love hate relationship with tax season.  While the hours are long and the work is complex and stressful, I seem to thrive on the anticipation of the deadline.  I am never happier at work than during the peak of our busiest season.  At the same time, I am often weary and a little cranky.  It is during those times when just the littlest thing can brighten my day.  It doesn't take a lot. Last night I was working late, and an email came across my screen from Mark and it asked "Can you find the surprise?" and had this picture of the current contents of our refrigerator attached.

And just when I was feeling the grumpiest I had felt all day, I saw my surprise - a bottle of my favorite wine, Conundrum.  Isn't this the cutest and sweetest thing!  My heart melted and I was reminded how incredibly lucky I am to be married to someone who finds joy in the little things.

Trendy Wednesday - Boys and Girls Club of America

In case you missed last week's Trendy Wednesday, I gave up shopping for Lent.  So, I thought I'd take this opportunity to switch the focus of my Wednesday post from fashion to philanthropy.  I'm sure you have all heard of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.  What an amazing resource for a community the B&G Club is!  They provide children an opportunity to experience after-school programs that they otherwise wouldn't have the possibility of attending.  Their mission is to "enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens."  They have national programs that impact all aspects of a child's life including "education, the environment, health, the arts, careers, alcohol/drug and pregnancy prevention, gang prevention, leadership development and athletics."  Check out their website to learn more about their programs and about how you can find a Boys and Girls Club in your area.

In my second year of membership in the Junior Service League of Beaufort, we had the opportunity to volunteer every Thursday at the Boys and Girls Club in their arts and crafts room.  There couldn't have been an opportunity more suited to my interests.  I love working with children, and I LOVE arts and crafts!  I spent several Thursdays in the arts and craft room there and each one was special.  However, one stands out to me.  I had been working in the room for about a half hour and spending time with a beautiful and sweet 1st grade girl who was hearing impaired.  She was so kind and such a bright star, but I couldn't help but feel how lonely she must feel in a room of people who struggle to communicate with her.  And in walked my friend Elizabeth.  She is a teacher, which you could tell by her easy way with children and amazingly creative project ideas.  Elizabeth noticed my new little friend and upon recognizing she was deaf, Elizabeth smiled brightly and started signing to her.  In the matter of a moment, I saw her come alive.  Her smile was wider, her eyes were brighter.  She was just like everyone else.  I imagine Elizabeth became her hero that day.  And I think she became mine too.  It was just one of those moments when you see pure joy and happiness in a child.  I was there volunteering thinking I was spending my time impacting someone's life when, in fact, they were impacting mine.  I think about that little girl every time I pass by the Boys and Girls Club.  I wonder how she's doing and what she's painting, but the one thing I never wonder is whether she will forget that day with Elizabeth.  I know she will always remember it, as will I.

Tasty Tuesdays: Basil Roasted Vegetables Over Couscous

Yesterday, I received a book I had ordered at the recommendation of a blog I stumbled upon about Paris.  It is called Hungry for Paris: The Ultimate Guide to the City's 102 Best Restaurants by Alexander Lobrano.  I started reading and couldn't stop.  I am one of those people who is in no rush to order a meal because I love reading the menu.  What is the chef pairing together for Spring?  What course could I most likely reproduce from home?  I love the dialogue between the chef and his or her patrons that exists on a menu card.  However, the more and more I read about dining in Paris, the more I realized I REALLY need to get on the diet train.  I have been exercising more rigidly than I have in years, and while I have been watching what I eat, Mardi Gras certainly wasn't easy on the waistline.

One of the things I find most challenging about dieting is eating healthy when dining out or attending a party.  The first is hard to control, but the second can be helped if you are asked to bring a dish.  I always try to bring something yummy, but also something I know I can look to as a healthy option when the buffet is filled with brie covered in caramel and dips made with mayo and sour cream.  This couscous recipe (From Cooking Light) is a perfect choice!  It is easy to prepare and can be placed in a 9x13 baking dish which makes it transportable.  It also has the lovely aroma of caramelized vegetables and basil and it is colorful - things that are nice if it presented on a buffet table.

I have made this dish using traditional couscous, but for those who do not like the texture of couscous, you could try Israeli, or pearl, couscous.  It is larger in size and softer in texture than traditional kind.  It can be hard to find in some grocery chains, but it can be found online here.  If you are carb conscious, it also comes in whole wheat.  Quinoa would also be a great substitute.

I doubled this recipe for an Easter dinner we had at a friend's house and it worked out just fine.  I added asparagus and cherry tomatoes to the mix of veggies as well.  I also had trouble finding basil flavored goat cheese, so I used plain goat cheese and sprinkled a healthy dose of chopped basil on top.  Low-fat Feta would work too.

Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 cup vegetables, 3/4 cup couscous, and 1 1/2 tablespoons cheese)
Ingredients
2 tablespoons minced fresh basil
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 garlic cloves, crushed
2 medium zucchini, cut into 1-inch slices
1 medium red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 medium yellow bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 medium red onion, cut into 8 wedges
1 (8-ounce) package mushrooms
3 cups hot cooked couscous
1 (3-ounce) package basil-flavored chèvre (goat cheese), crumbled
1/8 teaspoon pepper
Fresh basil sprigs (optional)
Preparation
Preheat oven to 425°.

Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; stir well. Add zucchini, bell peppers, onion, and mushrooms; toss well to coat. Arrange vegetables in a single layer in a shallow roasting pan. Bake at 425° for 35 minutes or until tender and browned, stirring occasionally.

Spoon roasted vegetables over couscous, and top with cheese. Sprinkle with pepper. Garnish with fresh basil sprigs, if desired.

Planning for Paris

With the excitement of football and Mardi Gras behind us, Mark and I are beginning to focus on our 5th anniversary trip to Paris!!!

For any of you who have read this post here, you can tell that 1. I am a type A travel planner leaving no detail to chance and 2. I plan our trips around food.  Is there really any other way to travel?!?!  I will admit that I am finding planning for Paris to be completely overwhelming.  Unlike NYC, where I feel I finally have some sense of where things are, Paris is a complete mystery to me.  I can't decide whether I should start with activities and plan meals around where we will be or plan meals and base our itinerary around the meals.  I'm going bananas here.  Mark and I have decided to get a white board and chart out each of our days so that our itinerary makes sense from a location logistics perspective.  I think this will help me plan since I am a visual learner.

A few details we have nailed down so far make me one excited tourist.  We will arrive in Paris on Sunday mid-morning following an overnight flight.  We are determined to check into our hotel, take showers, and hit the streets of Paris.  No napping!!!  Sunday night we will be partaking in what should be an AMAZING foodie experience.  I read about a place called Hidden Kitchen where two American chefs living in Paris prepare meals each weekend for 16 guests.  It is less of a restaurant and more of an intimate dinner party.  The meal is served in 10 courses with wines being paired with 7 of those courses.  The menu is not revealed until the day of the dinner once the chefs have been to the markets and picked out the menu's ingredients.  So we'll have to be extra willing to explore new and interesting flavors!  I have emailed HK and we have been booked for two seats at the dinner on Sunday evening.  The meal begins at 8:00 and ends at 11:30.  That is just my kind of food experience.  I love a good long meal filled with fabulous stories and amazing food shared over the course of an entire evening.  I am hoping by the end of dinner we have made some new friends and have learned all we need to know about what we must do in Paris!

The second item we have checked off our Paris planning to-do list is reserving my space at my food day with Chef Paule from Promenades Gourmandes.  On Wednesday, my Christmas Present will become real as I join Chef Paule on a tour of the markets of Paris.  I will be learning the basics of French culinary preparation skills and be preparing a three course lunch with the assistance of Chef Paule.  After a cheese tasting and some wine, we will be off on our food tour of Paris.  Mark will be joining us on this leg of our culinary adventure.  I cannot wait to walk the streets of Paris with him!

And finally, I have found the perfect museum exhibit for me!!!  Yves Saint Laurent is being honored in an exhibit at the Petit Palais.  It will feature the magificent works of this fashion icon whose career spanned more than forty years.  I'm not sure how crazy Mark was about this little discovery of mine, but I really can't wait to see it!  The museum stays open late on Thursdays and has a discounted admission during the later window.  Love that!  So I think we will be going here Thursday evening during dinner time to hopefully bypass some of the crowds.  Maybe we'll follow that up with a late night dinner at a brasserie.  My favorite part about Paris may be their tendency to dine late night.  You make such good use of your day when dinner is served after 8:00 pm.

PS - I did find the most helpful thing for translating foreign websites (especially menus).  Google allows you to enter in a URL here and translate an entire webpage.  This has been incredibly helpful when I have been browsing through the websitesof some of Paris's restaurants.

While there is still so much to plan, I am so excited about the things we have already worked on that I can hardly contain myself.  For anyone reading who have visited Paris, I would love to hear from you!  What was your favorite thing to do?  Place to eat?  Tour to take?  Museum to visit?  Was there something you would suggest skipping?  Any and all tips are appreciated!!!

A Nice Little Weekend

We have had a lovely weekend celebrating Mark's birthday.  He spent the day at our neighborhood's chili cookoff and enjoyed the beautiful weather.  I was able to focus more at work knowing that he was enjoying his day. After a long day of taxes and a good session with my trainer Bojan, Mark and I were ready for a birthday celebration.   We headed over to Outback Steakhouse and had a very nice meal.  After dinner, we went to our friends' house where my dear LP had made Mark a homemade strawberry cake.  It was so sweet of her to do this, and the cake was as delicious as it was beautiful.

Today was our first normal Sunday in a really long time.  I'm not complaining about all of our amazing and incredibly fun Sundays consisting of playoff games, Superbowl parties, and Mardi Gras parades, but it was so nice waking up and knowing we had no plans for this Sunday.  Mark made rounds at the hospital while I put together a menu for the week.  We got our groceries from the commissary and headed home to straighten up the house.  It's so nice to start the week with a full pantry and a clean house!

This afternoon, we took the puppies to the dog park in our neighborhood after a long walk.  It was such a gorgeous afternoon and we all had the best time chasing tennis balls and digging holes.  Sunday funday!

Isn't this sunset incredible!

Finally, one last celebration for Mark included a meal of Smothered Porkchops, Israeli Couscous, and Green Beans.  This yumminess was topped off with chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese icing and sprinkles.  Mark LOVED them!!!

Mmmmm...  Cupcakes

You're never too old for sprinkles!

That's how you cap off a birthday weekend!

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and that your week is getting off on just the right foot!!!

Happy Birthday, Hubby!!!

Just wanted to wish the best husband in the world a Happy Happy Happy Birthday!!!!!

With Mark on call this weekend and tax season in full swing (I'll be working from 7:30-4:00 today), we started celebrating Mark's birthday a little early.  Thursday night we had a really nice dinner at our neighborhood bistro, Patois.  We ordered all of his favorite things - the meat plate and the cheese plate and a bottle of Malbec.  Today, we are planning to have dinner at Outback Steakhouse per Mark's request.  Tomorrow, I'll be making a pancake breakfast and some yummy cupcakes for later on.  Mark LOVES cupcakes!!!

I really can't believe Mark is 34 today.  We met when he was 24 and I was 19.  Who would have known then that 10 years later we'd be celebrating his birthday together!!!  It still feels like yesterday.  I can't wait to celebrate for a lifetime!

Mark of a Champion

Perhaps I took for granted that all of America had studied the face of Saints Quarterback Drew Brees like the fans of the Who Dat Nation have.  For those who did, you knew that Drew has a birthmark on his right cheek.  The mark is so much a part of Drew that over Mardi Gras there were two guys on the parade route selling Drew Brees birthmark tattoos shouting "Get your mark of a champion."  While Drew was at Purdue, students drew (no pun intended) the letter P on their right cheeks to represent Brees's birthmark when cheering him on at football games.  I assume at this point that he takes these gestures as compliments since they are meant to make everyone a little more like him.  But the one gesture that had to be the most awkward I have seen in a long time came at the start of the interview between Oprah and Drew last week.  See the clip below to watch as Oprah attempts to wipe off Brees's birthmark after saying "Who just kissed you?"  Seriously? Seriously???  My first thought was do you live in a cave?  To be fair, maybe she's just not a football fan, but seriously?  Apparently someone has been fired over this situation, and that's the crazy part.  I guess when you're Oprah, you don't have to be accountable for your actions, someone else will be.  (Can you sense I'm not a huge Oprah fan - please don't hate me for that!!).  Of course, Drew handled the weirdness of that moment like the classy guy he is and just brushed it off (pun intended here).

Did you watch it?  Is that not the most awkward thing!!!

Trendy Wednesday - Something Different for Lent

For the last four years, I have given up shopping for Lent.  I know that giving up something for Lent does not compare to the sacrifice made for us, but I do find that it is a constant reminder of the difference between the things we need in life versus the things we want.  While I do not want to be preachy, I thought it would be nice to change the focus of Trendy Wednesday from a forum where we can chat about fashion trends, to one where we can discuss ways to impact the community around us.  So, for the next several Wednesdays, I thought I'd feature some fun and unique opportunities that will allow you to make a difference wherever you are.  I'd love to hear from you too if you have an interesting idea to feature.

Have you ever heard of a program called Kaboom?  Kaboom! is an organization whose vision is to build "a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America."  I had the amazing opportunity to work with Kaboom! right before I moved from New Orleans.  It was truly one of the most wonderful volunteering experiences I have ever had.  My office spent the day working with students from local universities, community volunteers, and employees from other local businesses to build a first class playground for one of New Orleans' first re-opened daycares after the storm.  The children from the daycare were able to work with the Kaboom! staff to select the colors of their playground, the particular style of their playground, and the special features of their playground as well.  The families of the children, the children, and the employees of the daycare were all there to work with us to build this special place.  At the end of the day, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony that brought a tear to everyone's eyes as the children saw all of the hard work come together to build a place where they could laugh and play.  Occasionally when I have time during our trips home, I will pass by the playground and watch the children playing there.  It warms my heart to see them so incredibly happy.

I hope you check out Kaboom's website.  Perhaps they have a workday coming up in your area.  Or perhaps you might decide that you know of the perfect place to put the next playground.

Has anyone else worked on a Kaboom project?

Muses Photo Review

The bad news - the weather was so terrible on Thursday night that we were unable to ride until Friday.  The good news - two days of celebrating being a Muse!  And like any good Muse, we didn't let the rain ruin our day!!  (Next post will have some extra photos and parade day photos too!).

We started our day Thursday with beignets, cafe au laits, and mimosas at my friend Katherine's house where we were each having our make-up applied.  Isn't girly time just the best!!!  After getting all dolled up, we grabbed a cab and headed on over to our luncheon.

Here are some photos from our float luncheon at Galatoire's.

After our luncheon, which is where we were when we found out the parade was going to be postponed, we decided to save our headdresses for Friday and head to Fifi Mahoney's (an amazing wig and makeup shop in the Quarter) to buy fabulous pink wigs.  Everyone went for a different style.  Mine was the "Revlon" wig.

The best part about Fifi's is that they fit your wig for you!!  What do you think about the Revlon?

After Fifi's, we went over to the Piano Bar at Pat O's.

From Pat O's we went over to Cat's Meow and sang "It's Raining Men" the Krewe's new song of the year.  Our hubbies and friends met up with us at Razzoo's where we enjoyed a little stage time.

We went for some drinks and dinner at Lucy's Bar and Grill and then headed over to the post-party.  And like every year, I have no energy by the time we get to the post-party and completely poop out.  We didn't stay too long and we missed the B-52s which was kind of a bummer.  But I wouldn't change a minute of our fabulously Muses day.

As soon as I can upload the rest of my pics, I'll add a post about the parade!!!

Don't Rain on My Parade

Mother Nature has not been kind to the Krewe of Muses in recent years.  The first time I saw the parade roll, I remember standing in puddles and being drenched in rain and thinking "those poor ladies."  Two years ago, we were postponed from Thursday to Friday night because of rain and high winds.  Well readers, all I can say is it's not looking good.  I am trying not to break down into a mess of tears because I realize that while you can plan for many things, weather is not one of them.  And yes, I know that in the grander scheme of life, our silly parade is not on the world's most important things list.  But in my little world, it is something so important to me that I cannot explain how sad I will be if we aren't able to ride.

The forecast for tomorrow night is very cold with heavy rain and possibilities of sleet.  I can't imagine that they will make us ride in sleet.  Ouch!   Hopefully, if it looks too bad, they will add us to the Friday night line-up again.  We won't know until sometime mid-day tomorrow, and I will update you on what the Krewe Captain decides for us.

For now, if you could say a prayer for us, throw us some positive energy, and do your very best rain dance, I'd appreciate that so much.

With a hopeful heart,

Nola Girl

Weekend Photo Update

As you know we started the weekend off by attending this year's Valentine's Ball benefiting Beaufort Memorial Hospital.  The dinner party we were attending was at our friend's family's farmhouse, and since it was muddy from tons of rain, we were asked to wear boots.  Well, guess what?  I had just the right boots for this weekend.

We were so excited that our friends Matt and Jaime were willing to go through with our crazy plan to fly down to Beaufort for the Valentine's Ball and the Superbowl!  It wouldn't have been the same without them.

Here's a picture of the Saints Mardi Gras masks that we gave out as party favors!  I have some extras that I plan to throw at Muses.  I think Saints throws are going to be a huge hit on the parade route!

Everybody loved wearing their Fleur de Lis beads to support our Saints!

Before the Arizona game, Coach Payton gave all the players a bat like this that had "Bring the Wood" carved on it.  Isn't this the ultimate host(ess) gift - a "Bring the Wood" bat from the Pickle family?   I think it was our lucky charm.

We danced to the Ying Yang Twins "Halftime" after every touchdown just like we do in the Dome.  "Here we come to get you!!!"

And the Saints won the challenge!!!!  What a momentum shift!!!!

And even though we were up by 14, I was a basket of nerves!!!

But there was no need to be nervous!!!  Because these are you're daddy's Saints!!!

Cheers!!!!!!

Oh Happy Day!!!!!!!!!!!

We're Number 1!!!!!

Here's to the ladies of the Who Dat Nation!

Still celebrating that the New Orleans Saints are World Champions!!!!!!!

Even Beignet got into the Saints spirit!

We truly had such an amazing time sharing this special night with our friends.  I will never ever forget what it felt like to watch Drew Brees accept the MVP award and hoist up the Lombardi Trophy.  What an amazing night.  It was more perfect than I could have ever pictured!
